Gallows Drummer Lee Barratt In Savakas

It's no secret that music has always been as much of an interest as bikes here at the Savakas camp. It's remarkable to have two team riders fronting great bands, and we have never directly set out to create a 'BMX' brand, just clothing for people with similar interests as ourselves. I have great pleasure in the fact that Lee Barratt, from Gallows, sent over these photos of him reppin' several of our designs. The photos were taken on his Honeymoon!!! Congrats Mr Barratt!!!

Talking Heads. A band that never had that much presence in this house when i was younger. I had heard a bit of them, but in the naivety of my younger CBGB loving years, i didn't really see where they fit in, i wanted to see Dee Dee Ramone, or David Johansen, not some dude dressed like Calton from the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air!!! How wrong i was.

I went back to my parents house from uni, a good friend had come to stay, we had been riding, i think we were beat, the weather had turned to shit, and moods were a little low. Me ol' man enters the room with a 'talking heads' best of, throws it on the bed, and says 'you might like this have a listen'...

I get a couple of beers, put it on the stereo, and that was that, we were going out whether we liked it or not! Thats is 'Talking heads' for you. In some weird space between CBGB's, Studio 54 and the local art school, with a shitload of fun thrown in!

To pick a song is fairly impossible...'Once In A lifetime' and Psycho Killer' are obvious belters, but im going for the sweaty Calypso boogie that is 'uh oh - Love Come To town'!

You could do a lot wrong with not checking out there version of 'Heaven as well'

Have a good weekend - Peace

In the recent discussions regarding 'narrow mindedness" around the Savakas camp...Eg only riding 7 pegs, 1 crank arm and only riding blocks, or coming out in a rash if tires hit anything other than dirt...the idea of 'Genre Busters' came into play. Its bit like ghost busters, but there's no ghosts and the theme tune is no where near as good. The idea was just to highlight the postives of taking an interest in all avenues of ones interest, be it bmx music or whatever.

Anyway, the idea fell though when i asked Max Bimar his top 5 Hip Hop records hahah...Some people are just punks i suppose!

Anyway heres Thomas Calcagno's best's of all terrain:

vert : jamie Bestwick
flat : mathias dandois
street : anyone creative
trails : mike aitken
park : Mike aitken

Heres mine:

Vert: Hoffman
Flat: Paul Osicka
Street: Van Homan
Trails: Jay Lonergan
Park: Joe Rich (fits all the categories)

This Cult Vid is so good, this cat turns his hand to a few types of BMX, and some seriously sick stuff on a board, amazing!

If your local, there's some limited edition shirts and framed Canvas' hitting Revolver in Colchester...so get down and see those good folks!

There will be some more product/ team news over the next few days, keep your eyes peeled!

Interpol, now a mainstream, almost household name in recent guitar music, and definitely a mainstay on many students shelves.

This band, along with a couple of others, turned me on to modern music. The first album leaked before release, and found its way on to fellow Savakas originator mr greenbush's computer. At the time i was a little narrow minded, open to many types of music, but thought a lot of modern stuff reeked like bad fish, and really hated most of the American college/emo shit you found on bike videos. Anyway it blew me away, ended up on both "Smell The Glove" and "it'll All Come Out In The Wash" (old videos we made".

The new self titled album is pretty good, no point in any real review, if you like the band, its well worth checking out.

As a footnote. The strokes had recently played in Colchester, i think slightly prior to their first LP. I had heard them, and liked what i heard. I was later in New York, in a bugged out record shop run by a Yank who was obsessed with UK mod bands, the dude even dressed like Austin Powers! We hit it off, i mentioned the Strokes, he said if you like them, you need to check out the only band worthwhile from New York, and pointed over to a 'Customer' in the shop, who nodded back! (obviously a member of this band)

Im pretty sure it was a certain memeber of Interpol...

I've never ridden flat, throughout the 15-20 years i've been into BMX, not once. Other than messing around in the street obviously, but it just didn't fit with what i could do, and wasn't as enjoyable as jumping things and going fast. This doest mean i would totally ignore it.

The reason I'm thinking about this, is after a few recent conversations I've had.

Many people stick to what they know, don't even consider anything outside the obvious. I have no problem with this fact, but i find it hard to understand. Its always been of interest to look at all aspects of things, terrains to ride, types of music etc. I was told recently about a very well known rider, taking a whole trail article in a magazine, collecting the pages together as one, and turning to the next article(because it was of absolutely no interest)!

Anyway, heres my favorite flatlander...fkin savage style!

As the BMX world, or rather media, over recent years taken more of an interest in slightly more Psych/Garage music and aesthetics, i thought i'd post this old chestnut. There's some cool shit on here, and a fair amount of average stuff compared to what's on offer out there, but its a friggin good place to start.
Also worth a nose...

A lot of early US punk and garage bands have become very well documented, and im sure you've heard many of the old CBGBS bands, and/or compilations. However, there was some shit going on down under back then, so you might be interested in this...

As we are delving somewhat into history, This is well worth a look! If you dont know where the Barspin originated, Brian Tunney wrote a cool history lesson over on the ESPN site...

This is so good, and mentions Moellers wonderfull dirt take on the move, and The 'Gonz's' early wallride Barspins, both of which had us kids bugging out! (Only a small mention of Griffin though, who had my favorite version)

As a footnote, id like to see more of these...(Jimmy Levan)

Because this blog started with music related posts, it would be wrong to not continue in such a direction! I will probably do some posts about some more obscure music, but for now, it seems that a lot of people don't know much about Terry Reid.

Not an artist i live by, but definitely worth checking out some stuff if its new to you. When i was growing up, i was introduced to Reid because i liked Led Zeppelin. When The Yardbirds disformed, Jimmy page was after a new singer for a new band (Zeppelin), and Reid was in for the role, but wanted to do his own thing, and Robert Plant took the place. So if you like Zeppelin, this cat could of been the front man, and you can really hear similarities between Plant and Reid.

Anyway, i was pretty into him when i was younger, and ended up using a track on our video "It'll All Come Out In T he Wash".
'Bang Bang' was written by Sonny Bono for Cher, and covered by Nancy Sinatra in a version used in the Film 'Kill Bill'.

Check some of the other shit anyway people.
