Curly's Travels Part 3!
If your familiar with this blog, its likely you have come across the past two installments from this cat! If not, have a look through previous posts to familiarise ya self with him, then get tucked into this one! Its an inspiration to anyone sitting in a backwards village somewhere needing escape...
So one of the first things i learnt when i started travelling is that it is alot more about the people that you meet, rather than the places that you go, and i recon i have met more people on this trip than i have in the rest of my life put together. Many of them have changed the direction and plan for my journey, not always for the better, but today i wanted to give a bit of a shout out to a select few.
The start of my trip was a bit rocky, i think everyone goes through doubt at a point of major change in their life, but i had never done anything like this before, and anyone who knew me before i left probably knows my social skills wern't exactly top notch.... After spending a couple of days on my own, meeting a few people, some of them i would of been better off if i had not met, i ended up in a conversation with a fellow dweller of old blighty.... infact two of them. The first two people i met on this trip that had a real positive effect on the direction of the journey, and the first two that will be friends for life, Bryony and Christina, because of them i ended up going to canada, a decision that was most deffinately for the best, a most excellent place in the world. They gave me a place to stay, showed me a good time aswell as giving me a load more confidence to go out and meet other interesting people in this world.
I'd heard rumours back home about a certain attitude that surrounds burnside skatepark, supposedly a very localised spot, but at the same time a place i had to go! I have dreamt about visiting this place pretty much since i started skating. I walked up sheepishly, wondering about what kind of welcome i would recieve, it was raining, and alot of the park was damp, i saw two skaters a similar age to me that were skating a 1 foot tall transition, and if theres one thing i love, its a 1 foot tall concrete piece of shit, so I decided these were the kind of people that i wanted to hang out with. They turned out to be Steven Reeves (those of you who dont know who he is should find out, an amazing skateboarder) and Perry Hall. Perry is the realest..... ask anyone who knows him. He went out of his way to help me out, mainly because he understood the possision i was in, a well traveled, hitchiking, skateboarding, ice tea pedalling legend.... hanging out with Perry and his friends made my time in portland, topped with an amazing night involving drinking on the top of burnside, talking shit, and going to see the legendary misfits. Carl Ross is boss but Perry will give him a run for his money, check out some of his amazing skateboarding antics below.
San Francisco is an amazing town, with an amazing skatepark, which is where i met the residents of the Culture Kids house. A group of amazing skateboarders, musicians and generally good people. I planned to visit san fran for about two days, and ended up staying nearly a month on a couch at said house, im still amazed and so greatful for their generosity, to open their house to a practicle stranger. So thanks to Andrew, Charlie, Justin, Mike, and everyone else, as i said these people are amazing musicians, you should deffinately check out some of the excellent music coming from these great minds! The links below are to two of the many bands that are the brain childs of at least one of, if not several of the residents of the c.k house. RECOMENDED LISTENING FOR SURE!!!!!!
The Moonhearts, my personal favourite is a song called 'Obliteration'
http://www.myspace.com/charlieandthemoonhearts
The Culture Kids, play it loud... it sounds better that way....
http://www.myspace.com/culturekidss
Lastly i would like to mention the Sables... now although i didnt meet them on this trip, they showed me the best time ever while i was in Australia , i stayed with them on and off for about three months, and they have given me many memories that i will not be forgetting in a hurry. Their kindness has been amazing, giving me somewhere to sleep, feeding me, and showing me a great time.

this photo pretty much sums up my time in Australia, constantly smiling, off skating, and being looked after by one Sable or another. THANKYOU!!!
This is just a tiny selection of the people ive met, if your not on the list that doesnt mean i have forgotten you, or am any less greatful for your friendship, but if i mentioned everyone i would be sitting here typing for the next week! these people are friends for life, which is a term i would not use lightly, i am indebted to all of you, and if i havent met you yet, im looking forward to it!
peace

Happy Christmas Droogs Chablis Chablis
"you are over 18?" the small Oriental woman remarks in broken English, and before i could respond, a slightly 'well to do' lady of the public interrupts..."of course he is, do you think he would be buying Chablis is he wasn't'....

BIT O' MEDIA FORS U'S
Roads are icy, supermarket trolley rage's at an all time high, People are aknowledging there third cousins sister twice removed called dave, must be that time of year bebopers!!!
Anyway, far more importantly, all the 2011 line is about to drop and Rush have a couple of new singles out! To celebrate such things, heres some bits and bobs of interest.
First up, the new 4down Catalouge is soooooo nice, lovely photos (Bensons doing?), great location, what more can i say? Shake ya carrots at these fine photos of Tom Blyth getting busy...

Excuse the slightly under par scans, I'm better at poaching eggs
Keeping with Tom, he had a dope article in the new Ride UK. Although the Pink infused cover may be an eye saw to some, this is not...

In this same periodical, Rob Castle has a fine and dandy Source ad...

Lastly, and never leastly, Angie sent me over the new issue of 'YEAH' zine, well worth reading in the bath! Good stuff right there...

Actually why not listen to Rush in 2011

Retrospective

Back in the Early days (or maybe earlier days), Ian Brook was a strong part of the BMX scene round here. He was an obvious early addition to Savakas, and largely helped define what we were trying to do with our Brand. Although some times quiet, the red head in him often explodes in bouts of anger and/or, and far more constructively, explosive radical BMX Stunting maneuvers.( I would definitely use that term if i worked Anglia News)
Ginge, or Steptoe as he is known, finally 'did one' from the salty shores of Clacton, to the even saltier shores of Brighton. He made the move quite some time ago, and thus departed somewhat from Savakas. Ian doesn't ride so much now, Rum took him from us, but i feel the lure of the new Harrington Jacket will bring him back haha! 'Gis a Tooooondown Steptoe'!

UK: Eastbourne, Rampworx, Unit 23
People To Ride With
US: Nina B, Danielle, Pittsburgh kids, everyone !
UK: Niki, Grant Smith, Kriss Kyle, Bruzas
Band
US: Buddy Holly, eyehategod, pelican, explosions in the sky... so much moreeee...!
UK: Unfortunately, majority of the UK listens to terrible drum and bass crap, which was always playing at skateparks and bars. I remember I wanted to go to a Misfits warehouse party that had Misfits cover bands.. some kid didn't even know who they were... realllllllllyyyyyy.
Scenic/Cultural
US: At the moment lots of snow in buffalo! But in Austin it's tee shirt weather hah. Everyone has big cars and trucks
UK: Everyone says England is gloomy and rainy but it didn't rain that much when I was there. So siked on the old mini coopers!!!! And the public transportation.
Brand(of any genre)
US: Urban outfitters, H&M
UK: Primark is amazing for cheap jeans!!!
Food
US: Tomato, basil and motz salad!, sketti, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, pizza
UK: roast dinners, lots of breakfast foods, chicken sandwiches
Drink
US: Mountain Dew, Pepsi, tea
UK: Cherry coke, mango juice, relentless, tea
Night Out
US: Using a fake id to drink, smuggling a flask of whiskey in, normally going to cheesy some hiphop bar to people watch and laugh
UK: Using my real id, hahaha, drinking cider, still smuggling in whiskey or cans, going to pubs which are fun to an extent (a bit boring) or some crappy night club that bumps shitty drum and bass
Heres Angie's edit from the guys over at BSD...SICK GUYS! Edited by the king of videography, pretending to manual whilst your front wheel is still on the ground, and the English Language...The sausage of the pink city!

Mr Bimarrrrrrrrr!!!

I sent some quick questions over to Max Bimar, with his favourites from the UK, and France. I set it out so it had two categories, but he kind of filled it in in his on way, as only Max would do haha! Makes good Reading anyway...
Riding Spot:
France:
My own spot was Peynier trail, but righ now it's my sofa.
I ride with Gilbert. He's way more better than me.
I love to ride with Joe aka Joe shady. Cause he's got a camera and he can make some footage of myself cause i love to see myself on pretty shady.
We love each other. He's gonna have a baby soon.
Alex Dropsy ride also great friend also, and some sometimes bibi noirot.
Then when i go to Marseille, i ride with some street machine as Justin fouque and some more stupid dudes.
UK:???
Band:
UK:
About music i do like english rock'n'roll as :
Dr feelgood, the clash (give em enought rope)
American as:
The fleshtones, Fugazi, Mc5,
France :
Starshooters, Ici Paris....
Australian as :
The radio birdman.
I live the french 60's through movies and Brigite bardot,
Gainsbourg is a king.
But i prefer the 90's french movies wave.
French cause i'm french. The theatre du spendide's got my love.
I'm not inside the new new wave, i don't care.
I understand just electric guitar from and before 90's.
Brand: (Neither France or UK!)
I use to be an american apparel dude cause of a great american girl from hollywood. But now im more black or red slim jeans leather shoes and jacket.
I'm fed up with my vans...
Food/Drink:(Neither France Nor UK:)
About food i'm able to cook some easy things, but i preffer to appreciate my mum's cooking. She's queen of "cuisine provençale".
I should drink less alcohol. I'm in love with lager beer.
Night Out:(France Only)
To go out i checks my "fews" friends cause it's hard to find depressive guys, or i go to rock show in Marseille.
I would love to "formed a band" (art brut song) but i'm lazy to do something else than criticize.
About girl, i would love one, but i'm lazy, to proud to talk and congratulate one, and depressant.
I love to grow the darkness of myself.
I should kill it.
ahah.

I was introduced to Dinosaur Jr by a good friend of mine many years ago. He was a skateboarder, who later took to BMX, weirdly riding ramps right foot forward and trails left foot forward...I have no idea why! He later did as he had done with skateboards, and proceeded to kill everything in his sight. Now he is a Fireman, less killing and more saving i'm sure.
Anyway, for some strange reason i've had an urge to tuck back into this band, who i bareley listen to now. I always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with them, sometimes i thought they were a little to 'wincy' and Collage like, other times they really hit the nail on the head. Dinosaur Jr have something really odd about them, a formula that shoud'nt really work, but just does, and as a live band they really fkin take care of the business. Theres a few bands like that for me, bands that in theory i feel like i should hate, but somehow they just work, Archers Of Loaf a prime example!
This is fairly new as Dinosaur JR are concerned, but i feel it sum them up...

Curly's Travels part two!
Curly is a long time friend of the collective. The last year he has been travelling the world, all on his own, with just his beloved skateboard. He previously did a post for this blog about a pretty savage trek he did out in Hawaii. Now he had another installment for us to tuck into about some times over in Australia!
When Curly left this small town, he was a young gun who worked at the local Spar, now he is a well travelled skateboarding adventurer, who has had run In's with immigration, the police, good and bad ladies, and even witnessed a death! Over to you Curly Sue...
"the thing i like about traveling is the amount of opportunities that arise, things that would never happen in mundane day to day life, whether it be going off and living in the woods, hitchhiking your way across a country or, this particular weekend, blagging your way into a festival on the premise of being a vert skater.
a weekend of getting hotel rooms, food, booze, meeting amazing skaters that Ive looked up to, backstage passes for some great bands and some product, all for free! not bad for someone who doesn't actually skate vert....
this weekend will be another one that i will never forget, just one of many great memories from an amazing journey around the world, and my point is that none of these memories would be there unless id stepped outside my front door and decided to go somewhere new. the world is bigger than essex, go explore and find out for yourselves!
much love to boomer for hooking up this weekend for me!
peace
